About us

Our mission

We aim to raise awareness of the life stories of vulnerable people in the hope that deaths caused by procedural issues can be avoided. In addition to this we aim to provide practical ideas on how anyone can help support vulnerable people through achievable actions. We do not raise money or personally receive donations.

  • We believe one simple change by Local Authorities and Health Care providers could safeguard many vulnerable people including children. Appointing a lead professional to oversee cases of vulnerable people would ensure all agencies communicate and collaborate effectively. Therefore, the lead professional would take ownership of the case ensuring records are kept up to date and acted on.

  • We are campaigning for agencies working with vulnerable people to have training on unconscious bias and how each vulnerable person has a story that they know nothing about. It is easy to become desensitised and forget what challenges vulnerable people have faced and are still facing. Training should focus on a shift from they didn’t engage to how can we enable them to engage with services.

  • In addition we want to see that language that is used by agencies to change and be up to date. For example, sex worker to be labelled exploited for sex and care leavers to care experienced.

  • People living in temporary accommodation can already be dealing with a lot of issues and we believe they should be able to expect basic standards such as a cooking facility and access to a washing machine on site.

  • We want care experienced people to have access to support services and transitioned to adult social care if needed. Care doesn’t end at 18, 21 or 25.

Our founder

Changing Boxes was set up by Clare after the devastating death of her nephew. Clare lives near Brighton and is a Teacher. She is also a school governor and volunteers at the national charity Drugfam on the helpline. She has an amazing son and was very close to her nephew that sadly died very suddenly.

Before his death she had contacted MP’s and fought for the right support for him. Sadly, the family weren’t listened to and arguably failures in the system lead to his very early death.

Whilst she cannot bring him back, she campaigns to make simple changes that could safeguard other vulnerable people. There is currently an Inquest and A Serious Case Review underway. The outcomes of these will be shared on Changing Boxes when completed.
